Six Reasons Why Summer is a Great Season for Senior Portraits
You step outside and feel the happy sunshine as it bathes your face in warmth. There is a slight breeze, just enough to refresh you and rifle through your hair. The birds are singing from their safe perch in the lush, verdant trees. This is the magic of summer and who doesn’t readily embrace a perfectly warm summer day here in Northern California and San Francisco Bay Area? It is an ideal season for your senior portrait session. And if that sublime little description wasn’t enough to convince you why summer is the perfect time for your senior pictures, here are a few more:

The weather is warm and there is that amazing light.
This means you can wear the flowy dress, boho skirt, shorts and a crop top, and all those fun summer clothes. Also, the guys can wear shorts which always makes them much happier and more comfortable than hard pants. The warm weather means no rainy days to worry about as well. Want a session that incorporates water? A warm summer will be perfect for hopping, splashing around, and you won’t be miserably freezing. And speaking of freezing, if you don’t like to be cold or it makes you uncomfortable, the warmth of the summer season will prevent that discomfort. When you’re not comfortable it can show in photos. Summer is gives us the best sunsets. If you want some epic sunset pics, summer is for sure your season for a Northern California senior portrait session. Also, that little bit of time after the sun sets, aka the blue hour, creates some dreamy and soft images. How fun would it be to have those unique images mixed into your senior pictures?

2. You got that summer glow, aka a tan :).
A little bit of a sun kissed glow is always a nice benefit of summer. There’s a reason everyone loves a bit of a tan. Just be sure to not get too much sun so you burn or get tan lines. That can’t be edited out of your photos.

3. The days are longer = more time for your session.
This means we have more time and can start later in the day. In the fall, as the days get shorter we have to start much earlier to allow enough time for your session and capturing that dreamy golden hour light. Unfortunately those shorter days also mean that our start time will be close to when school gets out. In the summer months we can start between 5pm and 6pm depending on the location we choose. Even on hotter days, the weather has cooled a bit with a later start time.
Who wants an adventure session? With that extra time for your portrait session we can venture farther, have more of an adventure, and get a truly exceptional landscape. This is another way to create extraordinary images that celebrate you!

4. One less thing to stress over come fall.
Getting your portraits done early is a stress reliever. Senior year is B-U-S-Y! Like, really long. On top of that you will want to savor every moment of senior year (well, maybe not the stress of finals lol). That checklist of senior year is full of to-dos: fun events like senior sunrise and senior picnic, plus you have college applications and essays, sporting events, and other extracurricular activities on top of studying and doing homework. How good will it feel to head into senior year having your milestone moment portrait session done? If you’re not focused on school you will be able to fully immerse yourself in this experience.

5. Summer schedules are more flexible because there is no school.
Three cheers to no school nights right?! Summer gives us so much more freedom with your time because you aren’t worrying about homework, school activities, getting to bed early, and sports. Although there may some work, travel, and possibly soccer or football practice, schedules are much easier to deal with than during the school year. In the fall you will be busy filling out those college and scholarship applications and in the spring you will be focused on the end of the year activities and graduation.
Summer also means you don’t have to deal with having a session on a school night. Juggling things on a school night is a challenge. There are sports practices, or maybe you’re committed to band. There is also homework and studying. On top of that getting a good night’s sleep is imperative. Summer provides you freedom and flexibility from these obligations. A late bedtime isn’t an issue when you don’t have school the next day.
You also are not competing with the many families trying to get on my calendar. Fall is peak season for family portraits and a lot of my dates get booked for those unless you secure your session date early. If you want more options for booking your session summer is the best time.
