Step Into Tyler's Joyful and Ethereal Senior Portrait Session in Pleasanton, CA, Alameda County
“You are responsible for the energy you bring into this room.” This is a quote from an episode of the Oprah Winfrey show with guest Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor and is the mantra I use in my daily life. After my Alameda County senior portrait session with Tyler, I can confidently say she embodies this quote.

There are people who come into our lives as a warm ray of sunshine. They bring so much positivity and joy that you just naturally gravitate towards them. It’s the way their eyes light up, how their nose does that sweet scrunchie thing with their tickled laughter, and the ease you feel when being around them. That is the good stuff and that was what my session with Tyler was like. She radiates in a quiet, but nurturing way and is the embodiment of liquid sunshine. I adore her. Also, she gives really good hugs.
When Clients Become Friends
In 2019 and 2020 I had the opportunity of photographing both of her older siblings’ senior portraits. It’s bittersweet to know that she’s the last in her family to be graduating from high school and closing the grade school chapter of her family’s life. This time has gone by so quickly, but it has been fun to see how each of their distinct personalities have come through in our sessions and their photos. Building relationships, watching kids grow, it’s what I love about my job.
Customized Senior Portraits
During the planning stages of her session Tyler’s mom, Gretchen, told me that she really wanted a session that captured Tyler’s sunny personality. They wanted a few images at the location where we did her sister’s portraits so they would look cohesive when displayed in their home. Tyler and Gretchen also wanted to incorporate the Pleasanton Firehouse Arts Center, and have a natural location that personified her incandescent personality. Tyler has been participating in the performing arts since she was young girl. She began her career performing in plays at Firehouse Arts Center and now teaches a younger generation of budding thespians. This location has been a corner stone of her creative life and incorporating that was very important to both of them.

The natural location also had a unique story behind it. One of the silver linings of our state’s 2020 Covid lockdowns was that Gretchen and her husband did a lot of hiking. For so many of us the outdoors had a strong when our everyday lives were turned upside down. As a result of all their explorations she knew the perfect location with a field and some pretty awesome Tri Valley views. I was ecstatic that she shared this spot with me because it is a lovely little gem that I have added to my location galleries for your San Francisco Bay Area photo session. The view of the valley below was symbolic of where Tyler had grown up and captured some of her East Bay, CA life before she heads off to NYU in the fall.

For years I have driven by a location that I felt would be perfect for a photo session. With the texture of the bridge and Dickens era light posts it has always been very compelling to me. So I threw that location out to Gretchen and Tyler for her East Bay pictures. I had been waiting for just the right person and Tyler was definitely that person. A detail I loved was how this location resembled Central Park, which seemed fitting for this newly minted NYU student. I am so thankful to them for accommodating my request because I am thrilled at how these images turned out.

Tyler will be attending NYU in the fall and I am just so proud of her accomplishments! It is incredibly fulfilling to watch the young kids I have photographed grow up and thrive. I think she is going to do great things in New York City and it will be such an enriching experience for her performing arts career. She even gets to do a semester in Prague! In April, Tyler and her family were able to visit NYU and she was able to sit in on some classes to see what this new season of her life will bring. When she graduates from NYU, Tyler would like to teach choir to children, which I think is so fitting given the warmth she exudes and her passion for music. Side note, she plays guitar and is pretty rad at it. She is currently in the Foothill High School choir program and has a steady list of performances under her belt between high school and community plays. We spent some time talking about 80s movies. Is there anyone who isn’t a fan of this era?! Her favorite is Ferris Bueller‘s Day Off. That’s a solid choice Tyler! The parade scene is so iconic.
Lulu’s Clothing is Always on Point for Your Senior Portrait Session
One of the most popular clothing brands for my senior clients is Lulu’s. They have a range of styles from casual to formal, and are perfectly on trend. Tyler’s white dress came from Lulu’s and it was the ideal choice for the natural setting during the second half of her session and it really popped under her vibrant blue graduation gown. The ethereal simplicity of the dress, tall California natural grasses, and white fence, all tied together in the most sublime way.

The late spring sun decided to hide behind the encroaching cloud cover so we didn’t get that warm golden hour light, but the soft colors were very fitting of Tyler’s gentle and kind personality. By this point the wind was picking up and the temperature had dropped noticeably. We were all getting a little miserable because it was frigid (by California standards lol). Fortunately I knew we had captured many authentic and lovely images of Tyler between the four locations. We had artistically preserved her sunny disposition and the deep tenderness that radiate from her. I knew we had some magical moments and that I could confidently send Tyler to the warmth of the car and her parents’ embrace.
