WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO BOOK YOUR SENIOR PHOTOS, PLEASANTON CA SENIOR PHOTOGRAPER

Ahhhh… senior year, the final chapter that is full of excitement and a seriously long to do list. For San Francisco East Bay high school seniors of the most common and eagerly anticipated items on their to do list are their senior photos. And just as an FYI, I’m not talking about your basic yearbook photo (if you want to know the difference between yearbook photos and professional senior portraits click HERE). The question I often get is, “When should we book our child’s senior portraits?” Hopefully this blog post will not only answer that question, but it will also help you feel informed and less stressed about this thrilling milestone.

As I mentioned, senior year comes with what can feel like a never-ending punch list of to do items from your senior pictures, to activities, to college applications, to buying your cap and gown. Therefore one thing to keep in mind is how early you want to get this crossed off your to do list. If you don’t want this lingering on your senior list I would suggest you book your session for the summer leading up to senior year. There are several benefits to this. The school year has not kicked into high gear so you have more time and the days are longer allowing you to book your session later in the day. You will be able to one hundred percent be able to focus on your senior session without any other school year stress. Another thing to keep in mind are the parent page deadlines for the yearbook. If your parents what to use your professional senior portrait in this page it is important to keep this date in mind. For many of our local high schools the due date is late fall. Therefore you should schedule your session in summer or no later than early fall, such as the first week of October. This allows us time to plan your session, have the session itself, meet for your session reveal, and allow time for editing your images. That right there is around a six week timeline at minimum from your session to your artwork being ready.

Something else to consider is the season you love. If you savor the heat, our golden northern California hills, and a sweet summer glow I would suggest summer to early fall for your session. Our weather stays warm well into October if you want light, breezy dresses and/or shorts. However, if you love to bundle up with a chunky sweater or have layers fall may be your season. This is also an ideal season if you love the warm colors the changing of the leaves bring. November is typically when that starts to happen in the San Francisco Bay Area. Fall is also the best season for beach photos as skies are often clear and the weather mild to warm. If you want beach photos May, June and possibly July are not your months as the skies are overcast and gray. Now if you love green and the vibrant, whimsical color of wildflowers then spring is when you should book you senior portraits. This time of year starts in March with mustard flowers and can possibly linger into early May if the weather is not too hot. However, that minimum six week timeline from session to receiving your heirloom artwork is something to keep in mind. If you want to display your child’s images at their graduation party you are going to want to schedule your session no later than the second or third week of April.

Finally, the last thing to consider are your activities senior year. Some extracurricular activities are a massive time commitment. Marching band comes to mind for me. At our local schools there is practice most days of the week in addition to competitions. Add onto this all the college applications you are dedicating time to and it can be a challenge to dedicate the time or enjoyment needed for your senior session. You don’t want to be so stressed that you’re not having fun or squeezing this moment in between different activities. This is a real scenario one of my marching band clients had so we opted to schedule her session in the spring. They were so relieved and thrilled that they did because it allowed them time to prepare for her session and to savor the experience. So if your fall is booked, plan to do your session in the spring or even late winter. If your spring is packed due to swim team, lacrosse, baseball or another spring activity schedule your session the summer leading up to your senior year or the fall.
