Savoring Tasha's Vibrant Walnut Creek, CA Senior Photo Session | Contra Costa County

There are moments you meet someone and just know they are going places. After my session with Tasha I can say just that. This girl is going places! But more on that later…
When Tasha and I met at her Walnut Creek, CA senior photo session there were two things about her that instantly pulled me in. First, it was her love of Cheez-its. I mean, who doesn’t love their crisp, cheesy flavor? It is is easy to bond over Cheez-its is it not? The second thing I quickly gravitated to was her friendliness. Tasha gives the warmest and most inviting hugs (my favorite kind!) and has a magnetic smile that easily spreads across her face from ear to ear. That smile was infectious. Everything about her exudes joy and positivity. To me that was sign number one that she is bound for great things.

Tasha’s mom, Ananda, was out of the country when we were planning her senior portrait session so it was just the two of us collaborating. What struck me was her poise and how professional she was in her emails. She was great to work with and had a lot of maturity in her correspondence. Now that I type this I realize that was actually sign number one that, “This girl is going places.”
It came as no surprise to me that she is in her high school's leadership class. However, it was more than her professional emails, being a leader just seems to be ingrained in Tasha’s personality. We talked about what she loves about leadership class here in the San Francisco Bay Area. For Tasha, it is the behind-the-scenes activities and watching all her hard work come to fruition. Aside from leadership class, Tasha won the American Legion School Award Medal. For those who don’t know about this prestigious honor, it is awarded to a student who exemplifies six qualities that define character: courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service.
So this was sign number three that she is bound for great things.

Here is one more fascinating fact about Tasha: she is headed to the Air Force this summer. She will kick off her time in the Air Force with basic training and then will be going to school so she will be an officer when she graduates. I have so much respect for anyone who serves our country. It is such a noble and admirable choice to make at such a young age. When we talked about her upcoming departure, Tasha told me she had wanted to do something that involved service whether it was Peace Crops or the military. Ultimately she decided upon the Air Force. Her parents, especially her dad who served 25 years in the Air Force, are so proud. This maturity and dedication was sign number four that this lady is going places.

Tasha had lots of Air Force swag to incorporate into her session. In addition to her t-shirt and pennant flag, she also brought along her acceptance letter. These unique details were such a fabulous way to incorporate her passions into her session and create authentic photos of where she is at this stage in her life. These details preserve Tasha's story and I love that she will have them to share with her kids and grandkids.

Being a leader and a member of the Air Force takes a lot of grit which is a trait Tasha has in droves. She has more grit and drive than many adults I know. Here's an example of her strength and grit, during the pandemic she was skiing and hit a rock. This resulted in a broken femur and subsequent surgery. For anyone a major injury like this requires a hefty recovery and that is no walk in the park. A year later, when things were looking up, Tasha tore her ACL in her other leg during a visit to the gym. After the first major recovery this was a set back that would discourage anyone and required a lot of fortitude and patience to overcome. She powered through and is still smiling that signature ear to ear smile.
I mentioned my editing and told her my style is to keep things like scars unless a client specifically requested I edit them out. These scars are a visible reminders of the grit she has had in overcoming the physical injuries she has conquered and I feel are something to take pride in. My words to her were, “You earned those scars!”

For her session Tasha brought along a casual outfit which was her Air Force t-shirt and white denim shorts, a super-cute lightweight white dress with cut outs, and her cap and gown. Her cap was decorated to celebrate her future with the Air Force and was adorned with lots of sparkle. Both her outfits paired perfectly with her cap and gown and gave her a variety of looks in her photos.

The setting for her senior portrait session was exactly what Tasha had envisioned. It was an ethereal and natural landscape. We also got lucky and still had some wildflowers and green this late in the season. Score! We also were extremely fortunate to have a dramatic sky as the sun began to set. These skies always create backdrops that are simply stunning and are great for large canvas or metal prints on the wall. Truly show stopping pieces of art!
