FIVE REASONS FALL IS THE PERFECT SEASON FOR YOUR SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA PORTRAIT SESSION
Mmm, does it get any better than fall in the San Francisco Bay Area. The season brings a myriad of delightful things to mind: cooler weather (well, at least in the mornings right lol?!?), the softness of cozy sweaters, the vibrant fall color as the leaves begin to change color, and tromping through pumpkin patches. For many, it is also the season of photo sessions. For families it is crunch time to getting those family pictures in time for their holiday cards. For Bay Area high school seniors it is a popular time for taking their senior photos. If you are not familiar with why fall is a fantastic time for photos here is a list of five reasons why fall is the ideal time for family and senior photos.

1.) The weather begins to cool down. In October we have cooler mornings and evenings which are a welcome respite after the dog days of summer. For clients this means you have less chance of being hot and sweaty in your photos and who doesn’t love that?!
The cooler weather also means you can wear layers or sweaters for your pictures. Sweaters and layers add texture and dimension to your images. They are also incredibly cozy and who doesn’t love cozy? Cozy clothes allow you to feel more comfortable in what you are wearing which can translate in your photos. That is a good thing.

2.) The sun sets earlier which means golden hour sessions start earlier. If you have young children this can be an asset to your session because it will not conflict with bedtime unlike those later summer sessions which don’t start until much later and can lead to cranky kiddos. An earlier start time avoids what I called the “witching hour” when my kids were little. We all know how quickly things can go downhill when kids near their bedtime and are out of that routine. Your golden hour fall session will begin anywhere between 3:30 and 5pm depending on the location and the month. That works much more cohesively with bedtimes.

3.) There’s that whole vibrant color vibe fall has going on. Let’s face it, this is the real showstopper for fall portrait sessions and are why it is such a popular season for photo sessions. All those warm hues of the changing leaves creates a rich landscape that is hard to beat. Unlike much of the U.S. here in northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area we don’t see a lot of those colors until November. Be forewarned, the window of fall color is a narrow one, but oh is it worth it! All that color pairs beautifully with most color options, especially jewel tones, denim, and neutrals.
If you have young kids the fall leaves are also a fabulous way to get them engaged in their session. What young child (or big kid for that matter) doesn’t love the opportunity to throw an armful of leaves up into the air. This creates genuine smiles and joy, it allows us to photograph some candid images, and it encourages kids to have fun and loosen up a bit during our session. 4.) Living in northern California means fall is the perfect beach weather. If you want a beach location for your senior or family photos fall is an ideal season. The sun is often shining and the temperature is mild to slightly warm. It is hard to beat our coastal weather here in Northern California! Plus some of the beaches still have water that is not yet freezing so dipping your toes into those foamy waves as they wash up on shore won’t leave your toes numb.

5.) The holidays are right around the corner. If you book a fall session your pictures will accurately represent how kiddos look on your holiday card or as they start their senior year of high school. Kids grow up and change so fast. If you took your photos in spring or fall they may change a bit by the time holiday cards go out.
Fall portrait sessions also make buying gifts for grandparents a cinch! You can treat them to a luxury album, and heirloom canvas print, or one of many other high quality printed options I offer here at the studio. In fact, you can even order your holiday cards during your session reveal! If you bring your list of family members to your session reveal I will work with you to find the perfect holiday git for them.
